The Clerk's office holds General Sessions criminal case files including warrants, indictments, bond paperwork, case dispositions, and sentencing documents. Common Pleas civil records and Family Court documents are in the same office. Copies can be requested in person or by mail. Standard copies typically run $0.25 per page and certified copies carry an additional fee.

Requests by mail should include the full name of the person, the type of case, and an approximate filing year or case number if known. The Clerk's office can assist with locating the correct case once basic identifiers are provided.

Note: In-person visits during business hours are often the fastest way to confirm whether a specific record exists and to get copies on the same day.

Darlington County Public Index Case Search

The Darlington County Public Index provides free online access to court records maintained by the SC Judicial Branch. It is available at all times and allows searches by party name, case number, or date range.

Results show case status, charges, hearing dates, docket entries, and judge assignments. Actual court documents are not downloadable. For certified copies, contact the Clerk directly. The system covers criminal, civil, and family court cases. Juvenile records are excluded.

A name-based search works well when paired with a date of birth or case year. Common names can return multiple results, so confirming case numbers against other identifiers prevents confusion between different individuals.

Note: The Public Index is updated as the Clerk processes new filings, so very recent cases may have a short lag before appearing online.

SLED Criminal History Check

SLED at sled.sc.gov maintains the statewide criminal history database for South Carolina. A SLED search covers all 46 counties including Darlington, making it the most efficient option for a comprehensive South Carolina criminal history check.

The SLED CATCH system allows online name-based searches for $25 each. Fingerprint-based requests are available by mail to SLED Records, PO Box 21398, Columbia SC 29221, or by calling 803.896.1443. Fingerprint checks are the most accurate method and are not affected by spelling variations in names.

State statute governing SLED criminal history is at Title 23, Chapter 3 of the South Carolina Code. This law governs how SLED collects, stores, and releases criminal history information.

Note: SLED covers South Carolina only. Federal charges and out-of-state criminal history require separate searches through those systems.

Darlington County Arrest and Sheriff Records

Note: FOIA requests must receive a written response within 10 business days for records under two years old and 20 business days for older records under South Carolina law.
